The Festival in IZUMISANO
― A Day Where Traditions from the Edo Period Meet New Festival Culture ―
Lighting up the autumn of Izumisano City, the Festival in IZUMISANO brings together the traditional danjiri (だんじり) and yagura (やぐら), passed down since the Edo period(1603–1868), along with the relatively new festival culture of yosakoi naruko odori (よさこい鳴子踊り), which originated in Kochi Prefecture. This exciting event is full of power and color.
■ danjiri (だんじり)
The danjiri of Izumisano and the Senshu region are believed to have started in the mid-Edo period mid-Edo period (1603–1868). For hundreds of years, they have been preserved as events symbolizing prayers for a good harvest and community unity. The highlight is the dynamic technique called yarimawashi (やりまわし), a thrilling high-speed turn. In Izumisano City and the neighboring Tajiri Town, you can even witness the rare sight of danjiri and yagura performing together.
■ yagura (やぐら)
The yagura has its roots in the festival culture of the famous Gion Matsuri and spread to the Senshu region during the Edo period (1603–1868), evolving into a unique local form. With vigorous chants, the yagura moves freely in all directions, creating a powerful spectacle that reflects both the unity and skill of the local people.
■ yosakoi naruko odori (よさこい鳴子踊り)
The yosakoi naruko odori began in 1954 in Kochi Prefecture and quickly spread nationwide as a newer form of festival culture. It is characterized by colorful costumes, lively music, and the rhythmic sound of wooden clappers called naruko. In Izumisano, local teams take center stage, performing energetic dances that draw the audience into the festive spirit.
