Yahata Shrine
A Historic Sanctuary with Edo-Era Architecture
Honda-wake-no-Mikoto (応神天皇 / Emperor Ōjin) – The 15th Emperor of Japan.
Okinaga-Tarashihime-no-Mikoto (神功皇后 / Empress Jingū) – A legendary empress.
About 1,800 years ago, Empress Jingū took refuge here during a storm, leading to the establishment of a temporary lodging (Angū), which later became Yahata Shrine. The main hall, built in the early Edo period, showcases the rare Ichimonsha-Nagare-zukuri architectural style.
The shrine is home to valuable cultural assets, including a Muromachi-period stone lantern, a worship hall, and a torii gate. Every October, the Danjiri Festival is held, featuring grand danjiri floats parading into the shrine—a breathtaking spectacle.
Yahata Shrine is also one of the six shrines included in the Izumisano Rokusha Pilgrimage, making it an important spiritual and cultural landmark in the region.
