The Pillow Festival, known as the “Makura Festival,” is a traditional spring event held at Hine Shrine, where Emperor Jimmu’s parents are enshrined. This unique festival is dedicated to praying for a bountiful harvest and features colorful “pillow poles” adorned with handmade pillows, paraded through the town with lively chants echoing in the air.
The festival reaches its climax on the final day with a grand mikoshi procession, creating a spectacular spring scene. Alongside the harvest prayers, participants also seek blessings for safe childbirth, harmonious relationships, and restful sleep. Don’t miss this rare cultural experience that beautifully blends tradition and community spirit!
