🎥 Archival Footage Now Available: Explore the History and Culture of Izumisano

— A rare look at Sano’s historic port town and traditional summer dance —

We are pleased to share a special documentary video produced in 2009 that captures the rich history and culture of Sano Machiba, a former shipowners’ settlement in Izumisano.

This video introduces the legacy of the Meshino family, powerful local merchants who prospered from the Kitamaebune shipping trade during the Edo and Meiji periods. It also features scenes from Sanoura, once a thriving port of call for merchant ships.

While filmed in 2009, the townscape captured in the footage still retained more of its historical atmosphere than today, making this a valuable record of the area’s cultural landscape.

The video also includes a glimpse of Sano Kudoki, a traditional Bon dance gracefully performed to shamisen and taiko drums—an iconic part of Izumisano’s summer traditions.

This archival film offers an excellent opportunity to explore the cultural background behind Izumisano’s designation as a Japan Heritage Site for Kitamaebune Port Towns and Shipowners’ Settlements.
