🌞 July 19 & 31: Celebrate “Doyo no Ushi no Hi” with Unagi!

The tradition of eating unagi (eel) in Japan dates back to the Nara period (8th century), with records showing that it was already part of the diet at that time. A poem in the ancient anthology Manyoshu even recommends unagi as a nourishing remedy for the summer heat. From long ago, unagi has been loved as a food to boost energy and vitality.

The custom of eating unagi on Doyo no Ushi no Hi—a special midsummer day—became popular across Japan during the mid-Edo period (18th century). Today, it’s considered a beloved part of Japanese summer culture, helping people stay strong through the hot season.
