Enjoy Autumn at Historic Spots Recognized as a Japan Heritage Site
Hinenosyo Oogi no Sato Cosmos Garden – An Autumn Tradition Coloring the Traditional Rural Landscape with Vibrant Blooms
As one of Izumisano City’s beloved autumn traditions, the Hinenosyo Oogi
no Sato Cosmos Garden welcomes more and more visitors each year.
Set against a nostalgic countryside backdrop of terraced fields and gentle
hills, delicate pink, white, and purple cosmos flowers sway gracefully in the
breeze.
This charming autumn scenery can be enjoyed for about two weeks only,
from early October.
Hinenosyo Oogi no Rural Landscape, recognized as a Japan Heritage Site
The Oogi District of Izumisano City has a rich history as a former shōen (a
medieval manor estate in Japan), and to this day, the area retains much of
its traditional character.
Terraced rice fields, village settlements, shrines, and temples form a unique
rural landscape where daily life and culture are deeply intertwined—an
environment that has been carefully preserved over centuries.
In 2013, it became the first site in Osaka Prefecture to be designated as an
Important Cultural Landscape of Japan, and was later recognized as a
Japan Heritage Site under the theme “The Townscapes of Medieval Hineno-
shō Conveyed through Historical Records and Illustrated Maps.”
This recognition highlights the harmony of agriculture and daily life, and the
district is celebrated as a place that conveys the spirit of local history and
culture to future generations.
Against this remarkable backdrop, the Hinenosyo Oogi no Sato Cosmos
Garden takes place each autumn, offering visitors the chance to enjoy a
“special scenery” where colorful cosmos fields blend beautifully with the
historic rural landscape.
The Story Behind the Cosmos Garden
To preserve the rich natural environment and historical heritage of the Oogi
District, the Oogi Machizukuri Council (community town-building council)
was established.
We spoke with Mr. Matsushita, who has been involved with the Cosmos
Garden since its early days.
“In the past, we made use of fallow fields,” he explained. “Today, we plant
cosmos flowers as scenic crops, working to protect the local nature and
landscape while also creating a place for people to enjoy.”
Community-wide Efforts and Management
The Hinenosyo Oogi no Sato Cosmos Garden is brought to life through the
tireless efforts of the local community.
From the Oogi Machizukuri Council to neighborhood associations, the fire
brigade, community welfare commissioners, and women’s groups, around 40
to 50 people work together to nurture and care for the fields.
In July, seeds are sown in preparation for the October bloom. In August, the
seedlings are carefully thinned (mabiki) to prevent overcrowding, while
weeding and field maintenance take place. By September, nets are set up
(amikake) to keep the cosmos from falling over in the wind, and paths are
created so visitors can stroll through the colorful fields.
“At first, we didn’t use nets, and the flowers would topple over in the wind.
Once they fall, it’s difficult for them to stand again. We want people to
enjoy seeing the cosmos standing tall and blooming beautifully,” says Mr.
Matsushita, who has been involved with the garden since its early days.
Thanks to this heartfelt care, when October arrives, the cosmos burst into
full bloom across the fields, ready to welcome visitors with their dazzling
display. Even on opening days, it is the local residents who take the lead in
ensuring smooth operations, showcasing the true spirit of community
support.

Growing Visitors and an Expanding Circle of Repeat Guests
Thanks to the community’s dedicated efforts, the Hinenosyo Oogi no Sato
Cosmos Garden has been attracting more and more visitors each year.
Last year, around 5,000 people came to enjoy the blossoms, with many
traveling from outside the region to see the garden.
“Compared to ten years ago, the number of visitors has definitely increased.
We also see many repeat guests who look forward to coming every year,”
says Mr. Matsushita.
Visitors often praise the garden, noting how carefully the fields are
maintained and how beautifully each individual flower blooms.
Highlights of the Cosmos Garden
“If you’re planning to take photos, I recommend visiting in the morning
when the cosmos glisten with morning dew,” says Mr. Matsushita.
In the clear air, the flowers sparkle in the sunlight, creating picture-perfect
moments that are sure to impress. For those simply strolling through the
fields, it is an unforgettable sight to behold.
Local farm produce is also sold on-site, offering visitors not only the chance
to admire the flowers but also to enjoy heartwarming interactions with local
residents.
Come and celebrate the arrival of autumn as you admire the cosmos against
the backdrop of a traditional rural landscape.
