Take home an exceptional, carefully crafted item from Izumisano, the birthplace of towels in Japan.
Still cherished by many, Senshu Towels are renowned for their outstanding quality and superior functionality.
Did you know that towels were first made in Japan in 1887 (Meiji 20) in the Senshu region, centered around Osaka’s Izumisano?
Long ago, cotton was cultivated in the Senshu region, and the textile industry flourished. Among those involved, Enjiro Satoi, a cotton textile manufacturer, studied towels that were imported from overseas. He went on to develop Japan’s first towel weaving machine, which quickly spurred the growth of the towel industry.
The defining characteristic of Senshu Towels lies in a process called “Atozarashi” (後晒し), or “after-washing,” performed after the towels are woven.
This unique technique removes excess starch and impurities, significantly boosting the towels’ absorbency and enhancing their soft texture. The after-wash process is carried out using the abundant groundwater of the Senshu region, which is the key to creating their fluffy, gentle feel and excellent water absorption.
Thanks to their high quality, Senshu Towels are prized not only for daily use but also as thoughtful gifts. In recent years, new products have emerged that honor traditional craftsmanship while placing a greater emphasis on modern design. Additionally, with growing environmental awareness, manufacturers have been developing items that align with SDGs.
Whether as a personal indulgence or a meaningful gift, Senshu Towels offer an irresistible charm that’s worth experiencing firsthand.
